Why is there so much spam on the craigslist personals?

I was just curious why the craigslist personals are filled with so many people who are inviting you to see pictures or bring you to another site. Is it usually an automated response, and how exactly does anyone benefit monetarily from it? Is there any potential use in using craigslist or are they all fake?
