If they did not go over the top when ordered the military police went along the trench and shot them. Men who injured themselves in order to get out were shot for 'Self inflicted wounds' Men who were absolutely shattered and could not take any more were shot. The British even shot a 17 year old who had lied about his age in order to volonteer. The French had been known to order their own guns to fire on a trench to force the men out. Near the end of the war in 1917 the Russians called it off and stopped fighting, and a Russian regiment on the Western front said that therefore they would stop fightig too. They were in a French sector, and they were ordered to hand in their weapons and fall back to a safe field to await repatriation. The French turned the artillery on them and killed them all. The upper cles, then and now regard ordinary people as dirt and treat them as such. Never have any illusions about your status in society, as proved by the way the powerful treat their soldiers once they have done their bidding.
