I am having trouble getting ?

I encode them with the right software and all seems fine until I burn them onto a disk. When I try to playback in my DVD player, its often distorted and makes a scratch-like noise which is unwatchable. This doesnt happen on all of them though, example: I put 3 different mpeg's onto one disk, 2 of them work fine but one is distorted like I said. Is there anything I can do to make sure they will burn properly?
